Commander Alan Shepard, Aged 37, became the first U.S. astronaut May 5. He shot up?

  • Description

Commander Alan Shepard, Aged 37, became the first U.S. astronaut May 5. He shot up 115 miles into space from Cape Canaveral, Florida, and was picked up 302 miles out in the Atlantic, 16 minutes later.

The world now has two spacemen - Soviet Major Gagarin, 10 years younger, made his flight into space 23 days earlier. He went round the world in 109 minutes. The American commander, unlike Gagarin, guided his space capsule. The U.S. hope to emulate the Russian achievement of sending a man in orbit around the earth later this year.
