Among the favourites for this year's contest, to be held on Saturday night, is Britain's Olivia Newton John.

Singers, song-writers and international pop music delegates have been arriving in Brighton for the last week and have proved popular targets for autograph hunters. One of the most sought-after has been Spanish singer Peret.

Seventeen countries are participating in the contest. These include Luxembourg, Britain, Norway, Monaco, and Italy.

Security precautions were strict, with private detectives joining uniformed policemen. France withdrew from the contest because of the death of President Georges Pompidou.

London bookmakers have made the Netherland's Mouth and Macneal group, favourites for the contest. Luxembourg is represented by an English singer, Irene Sheer, and she's hoping to make it three wins in a row for the tiny state.

Israel's Poogy group took advantage of the Spring sunshine to rehearse their entry.

The Eurovision song contest began eighteen years ago.
