  • Description

Jeering demonstrators confronted members of Mrs. Golda Meir's government on Sunday (24 March) as they left her offices after a cabinet meeting. The demonstrators were calling for the resignation of the government, and in particular, Mrs. Meir and her Defence Minister, Mr. Moshe Dayan.

Some 4,000 took part in the demonstration. They were members of a popular movement started about two months ago by Motti Ashkenazi, an Army Reserve Captain who commanded the only position on the Bar Lev line not to be captured by Egyptian forces during the Yom Kippur War.

Later, the demonstrators held a rally. They heard Ashkenazi announce he was disbanding his one-man movement to help set up a unified organisation of several protest groups. He also called for the nation's economy to be put on an emergency footing, for the tenure of public officials to be limited and greater public control over elected officials.

The weekly cabinet meeting, which coincide with one of the quietest days on the Golan Heights front, lasted for five hours. Ministers discussed the Golan Heights situation and Israel's complaint to the United Nations Security Forces that the Egyptians had allegedly placed fresh artillery on the East Bank of the Suez Canal in contravention of the disengagement agreement.
