Background: Police and firemen stood by Aug 13 as demolition contractors deliberately burned down a derelict mansion near Sevenoaks, Kent, U.K. It is planned to build a block of twenty-four modern flats on the site.

The mansion, Shoreham Place, was considered unsafe for demolition workers to get inside, so the inside was burned right out, and the brick structure collapsed by itself.

Once the beautiful home of Lord Mildmay, famous as an amateur steeplechase jockey, the mansion's deliberate destruction is but another tragedy in the Mildmay family. Lord Mildmay's clothing was found on a Devonshire beach some five years ago. His body was never found.

Stately homes, one-time scenes of English aristocratic "gracious living", are now mostly scenes of feverish activity on the part of their owners, in attempts to raise money to pay heavy death duties and upkeep costs. Some of the larger homes have opened their doors to sightseeing excursions, others not so attractive are for sale.
