  • Description

Uganda's President Idi Amin called a meeting of women from all levels of Uganda society in Kampala on Wednesday (22 November). It was the latest in a series of meetings with groups of Ugandans -- and foreigners -- he has held since becoming president.

General Amin told the women they should form one strong organisation for the entire country to represent all Uganda women, regardless of origin, tribe or religion. He said many small organisations would be disorganised and short of money -- and, in fact, the Government had not been able to decide which organisation should select a delegate for the All African Women's Conference at Dar-es-Salaam.

The President warned women against being enlisted to spy for foreign powers, and said that a considerable number of deported Europeans had been found hiding in Ugandan women's homes.

The President also warned the women of tight trousers and threatened to pass laws banning "ungraceful" clothes.

The Government had great respect for women and that was they there was a ban on "garments" which are used to expose women ungracefully".
