Background: The grim gaol at Spandau is in the news as an expensive and, seemingly, pointless reminder of the war-crimes of the Nazis. For here, in this rumbling bastion are housed just three prisoners...Rudolph Hess, former deputy Fuehrer, Albert Speer, Armaments Minister, and Baldur von Schirach, Hitler's Youth Leader. An announcement that the authorities were considering closing Spandau recently prompted the former wife of von Schirach to fly to England and plead for the release of the prisoners. But they still remain in, what must be, world's most expensive gaol. Manned by armed guards alternately drawn from Russian, British, French and American units, the prison that was built to house 600 prisoners is run on the lop-sided economy that demands fullest precautions for the three ex-Nazis. Strong security measures are in force all around the gaol...there is always the possibility that attempts may be made to free the prisoners. By special dispensation, however, these pictures were taken of the monthly changing of the guard. Today, American Guards took over from the Russians. Next month it will be the turn of British or France. And so it will go on until such time as the four powers might agree to transfer the prisoners to another gaol, or release them altogether.
