AT COVENTRY, OCTOBER 4, FOURTEEN YOUNG GERMAN BUILDERS BEGAN RECONSTRUCTING THE VESTRIES OF THE CITY'S CATHEDRAL - RUINED DURING WAR-TIME AIR RAIDS.

MOST OF THE GERMANS ARE YOUNG CRAFTSMEN WHO HAVE COMPLETED THEIR APPRENTICESHIPS AND ARE WORKING FOR LESS THAN THREE SHILLINGS A DAY CONVERTING THE VESTRIES INTO AN EXTENSION OF THE CATHEDRAL'S INTERNATIONAL CENTRE. THEY WILL BE ON THE PROJECT - "OPERATION RECONCILIATION" - FOR ABOUT SIX MONTHS. WORK IS EXPECTED TO BE FINISHED IN TIME FOR THE CONSECRATION OF THE CATHEDRAL NEXT SPRING.

THE COST OF THE WORK, PUT AT GBP10,000, IS BEING MET BY CHURCHES, SCHOOLS AND YOUTH GROUPS IN GERMANY. THE WORKING PARTY IN COVENTRY IS ONE OF A NUMBER OF GROUPS CARRYING OUT SIMILAR RECONSTRUCTION PROJECTS IN PARTS OF HOLLAND, NORWAY, GREECE AND FRANCE, WHICH SUFFERED UNDER GERMAN ATTACK DURING THE WAR.

NEARLY ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE COVENTRY TEAM, INCLUDING ELECTRICIANS, MASONS, JOINERS AND CARPENTERS, COME FROM THE EASTERN ZONE. THEY WILL LIVE IN A HUT, EQUIPPED AS A DORMITORY, ON THE CATHEDRAL GROUNDS. THE PROVOST HAS MADE AN APPEAL TO COVENTRY PEOPLE TO OPEN THEIR HOMES TO THE GERMANS FOR OCCASIONAL MEALS AND WEEKENDS.
