  • Description

Pockets of resistance were still being cleaned up early today (Sunday, 11 July) around the United Nations mission building and Government radio offices in Rabat after the weekend's abortive coup against King Hassan.

King Hassan, speaking today at a press conference, said that the leaders of the attempted coup will be executed within the next 24 hours. He said that ten of the coup leaders were among the 176 people, including the Belgian Ambassador Marcu Durpet, who were killed in the fighting.

This afternoon army marksmen, backed by tanks and armoured vehicles, took up positions on rooftops and sporadic fighting occasionally broke out in the streets near Rabat's main railway station. Road blocks have been erected on all highways and byroads leading into the Moroccan capital, and the identities of all Moroccan travellers were still being checked tonight.

The attempted coup, staged by a small group of dissident army officers and over a thousand army cadets, may have been motivated by drugs. King Hassan said that a flask of an excitant drug had been found on each of the attackers at the seaside palace, and that the attackers had "jerky gestures and wide staring eyes."
This film, shot this morning by Moroccan television, was telerecorded off the Eurovision circuity by VISNEWS.
