HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE PACKED SINGAPORE'S HAPPY WORLD STADIUM TO SEE A VARIETY PERFORMANCE. "THE NEWSPAPERS CONCERT", ONE OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF SINGAPORE'S CELEBRATIONS TO MARK THE INSTALLATION OF THE FIRST MALAYAN-BORN HEAD OF STATE.

THE NEW HEAD OF STATE, INCHE YUSOF ISHAK ATTENDED THE PERFORMANCE ACCOMPANIED BY PRIME MINISTER MR. LEE KUAN YEW AND OTHER MINISTERS.

THE CONCERT OPENED WITH A SEMAI DANCE - AN ANCIENT AND RITUALISTIC DANCE OF THE SEMAI ABORIGINES FROM MALAYA'S PAMANG STATE. THE GROUP HAD THEIR OWN MUSICIANS, AND AN ORCHESTRA OF GONG, DRUMS AND HOLLOW BAMBOOS.

AN INDIAN CLASSICAL DANCE BY MRS. BHASKAR BROUGHT ANOTHER ANCIENT, BUT VERY HEAVY REFIND, ITEM -- A CONTRIBUTOR BY THE INDIAN IMMIGRANTS.

THE MALAY COCONUT SHELL DANCE, WITH ITS SIMPLE BUT HAUNTING RHYTHM, WAS A PIECE FROM THE RICE MALAY FOLK DANCES.

THE CHINESE ITEM WAS A SWORD DANCE EXECUTED BY AGILE FAST-MOVING CHINESE GIRLS, DEPICTING THE THEME THAT WOMEN ARE EQUAL IN ALL RESPECTS TO MEN.

THESE ITEMS STRESSED THE MULTI-RACIAL CHARACTER OF SINGAPORE'S POPULATION AND CULTURE, BUT SPEECHES AND SONGS STRESSED THE NECESSITY OF BUILDING ONE CULTURE OUT OF THESE RICH AND VARIED "RAW MATERIAL" BROUGHT TO SINGAPORE BY ITS IMMIGRANT POPULATION.
