Salt Lake City, in the State of Utah, U.S.A. has been chosen as candidate for the site of the 1976 Winter Olympics by the United States Olympic Committee. In Utah itself, opinion about whether this is a good thing or not for the city is divided. Many are concerned about the effects on the environment. The mayor, Jack Garn is personally in favour of having the Games there, as long as he can cut down what he called the "extravaganza" of the recent Olympics.
SYNOPSIS: Slat Lake City, Utah....from the air..and it's here that the 1976 Winter Olympic Games will be held if the United States Olympic Committee is successful in its bid to stage them. Competition for the honour comes from Italy and Austria.
But foreign competitors aren't the only worry for the committee....it's not at all clear that the citizens of Salt Lake City want to be the hosts, and an earlier proposal to stage the Games at Denver has been vetoed by the voters of Colorado mainly on the grounds of prohibitive costs.
Salt Lake City is certainly an ideal location....the district is beautiful and the citizens want to keep it that way. This is the main problem....a fear that a modern Olympics can spoil the environment, despite a promise from the mayor that he will keep them within bounds.
