  • Description

Thousands of students have held a protest march in Venezuela against the Government's education policy. The demonstration follows recent strike action by teachers.

SYNOPSIS: The Government gave the students permission to march through the streets of Caracas, but carefully controlled the route. A large number of police were on duty but -- unlike previous student demonstrations here -- the march went off peacefully.

The protestors were campaigning mainly against the recent break-up of the teachers' strike and the presence of armed forces in their university precincts. There were slogans in support of human rights -- and others criticising the small amount of money available for university education.

A year ago students in Caracas defied a government ban on demonstrations to protest at the possible close down of the Central University, because of shortage of funds. During that demonstration, 10 police and students were injured in a two-hour clash.

Before that, in January 1977, students throughout Venezuela held a strike over Government education policies. During what they termed a 'Day of Denunciation', the protestors claimed that 43,000 students were being denied university places. Venezuela has 11 universities and 32 state Higher Education Institutes, attended by more than 300,000 young people.
