Japan's nine electric power companies and the Japan Atomic Power Co. Friday signed nine-year contracts?

  • Description

Japan's nine electric power companies and the Japan Atomic Power Co. Friday signed nine-year contracts in Tokyo with a French company on the reprocessing of spent nuclear fuel in Japan.

Under the contract, France's Compagnie Generale Matieres Nucleaires (COGEMA) will reprocess a total of 1,6000 tons of used nuclear fuel beginning in 1962 for the Japanese companies at a cost of 1270 billion.

The signing of the contracts between the French firm and each of the 10 Japanese companies was held at the Keidanren Hall in Otemachi, Tokyo, in the presence of G. Besse, president of COGEMA, and leaders of the Japanese companies.

The Japanese companies are scheduled to sign similar contracts on spent nuclear fuel reprocessing with British Nuclear Fuels, Ltd. next spring.

Under contracts signed Saturday, the Japanese firms will hold the ownership of uranium and plutonium products extracted from spent fuel, and receive high-level radioactive waste produced through reprocessing.

The Japanese firms will pay part of the contract money. Y6.3 billion, to COGEMA until the end of this month.

The Japan-U.S. nuclear energy agreement requires Japan to obtain U.S. approval for shipment of spent nuclear fuel supplied by the U.S. from Japan to other countries.

A spokesman of the Japanese power companies said that they would obtain U.S. approval shortly before the shipment of used fuel to France would begin in 1982.

For details of Japanese reprocessing plant at Tokai (final sequence) see your files. There's been a lot of Reuters copy on this recently as the Americans gave the Japanese permission to go ahead to operate the reprocessing facility for the next two years on an experimental basis.

This story was originally shot and edited for EVN feed; but eventually rejected and unshipped.
