Background: IN THE SENRI HILLS OUTSIDE OSAKA, JAPAN'S SECOND CITY, EMPEROR HIROTHITO, ACCOMPANIED BY THE EMPRESS AND CROWN PRINCE AKIHITO, TODAY (SATURDAY) OFFICIALLY OPENED EXPO '70 - THE BIGGEST AND MOST ELABORATE INTERNATIONAL EXPOSITION EVER STAGED - TWENTY-FOUR HOURS BEFORE THE GATES WERE TO BE THROWN OPEN TO THE PUBLIC. GUNS BOOMED, BALLOONS ROSE, CONFETTI SHOWERED DOWN, BANDS PLAYED, CHOIRS SANG, MILLIONS OF LIGHTS WENT ON, AND A GIANT ROBOT BREATHED PERFUME ON THE 7,000 SPECIALLY-INVITED GUESTS AS THE EMPEROR LAUNCHED THE SIX-MONTH EXTRAVAGANZA.

AFTER THE OFFICIAL JAPANESE FLAG RAISING CEREMONY, THE FLAGS OF ALL THE OTHER SEVENTY-SIX NATIONS WERE RAISED OVER THE 115 PAVILIONS THAT FILL THE SPRAWLING 815-ACRE SIT - A FORMER BAMBOO GROVE.

THEN, THE EMPEROR'S ELDEST SON, CROWN PRINCE AKIHITO, PUSHED A BUTTON ON A SPECIAL PLATFORM IN FRONT OF THE ROYAL BOX AND SET THE FESTIVAL PLAZA EQUIPMENT INTO MOTION - A LARGE BALL IN THE CENTRE OF THE CEILING EXPLODED TO THE ACCOMPANIMENT OF COMPUTER-CONTROLLED ELECTRONIC MUSIC, CASCADING CONFETTI AND PAPER STREAMERS ONTO THE GUESTS. THIRTY-THOUSAND BALLOONS SOARED INTO THE AIR AS THOUSANDS OF FIREWORKS EXPLODED.

ANOTHER HIGHLIGHT OF THE DAY WAS A GIANT 5-TON ROBOT, COVERED IN FLASHING LIGHTS, AND BREATHING CLOUDS OF PERFUME, WHO CLANKED FORWARD AND SAID: "LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, I AM DEME, THE ROBOT. I WOULD LIKE TO WELCOME YOU TO EXPO '70." THEN, WITH ELECTRONIC FLASHES CUTTING ACROSS THE PLAZA ROOF, A CHILDREN'S BAND STEPPED OUT OF THE ROBOT AND SOUNDED A FANFARE.

AND SO, EXPO '70 WAS LAUNCHED - AND THE FIRST OF THE 40 MILLION PEOPLE EXPECTED TO VISIT THE EXHIBITION STARTED THE ROUNDS OF THE NATIONAL STANDS.
