  • Description

THE WORLD'S MAJOR TRADING NATIONS TODAY (SUNDAY) RALLIED TO HELP BRITAIN IN THE 14.3 PER CENT DEVALUATION OF STERLING BY REFRAINING FROM DEVALUING THEIR OWN CURRENCIES. AT HOME, HOWEVER, THERE HAS BEEN CONSIDERABLE CRITICISM OF THE MOVE -- INCLUDING CRITICISM FROM THE LABOUR GOVERNMENT'S SUPPORTERS.

A WIDESPREAD INTERNATIONAL BELIEF WAS EXPRESSED TODAY THAT THE DEVALUATION, ANNOUNCED BY THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT LAST NIGHT, WAS REASONABLE, AND IT WAS HOPED THAT THE MEASURE WOULD FINALLY SET BRITAIN ON THE ROAD TO ECONOMIC HEALTH. ONLY A HANDFUL OF OTHER COUNTRIES -- MOST OF THEM FOOD SUPPLIERS TO BRITAIN -- HAVE ALSO DEVALUED AND THEREBY LARGELY REDUCED ANY ADVANTAGE BRITAIN MIGHT HAVE GAINED IN TRADING WITH THEM.

FRENCH FINANCIAL EXPERTS GAVE THEIR APPROVAL TO THE BRITISH MOVES. IN PARIS TONIGHT, FOREIGN MINISTERS AND OTHER REPRESENTATIVES OF ALL SIX COMMON MARKET COUNTRIES CAME TO DISCUSS A COMMON APPROACH TO THE DEVALUATION OF STERLING, AND AGREED TO CONTRIBUTE TO THE 1,400,000,00 DOLLAR INTERNATIONAL MONETARY FUND LOAN BRITAIN HAS REQUESTED.

THE WEST GERMAN FINANCE MINISTER, HERR FRANZ-JOSEF STRAUSS SAID HIS COUNTRY WOULD CONTRIBUTE 200,000,000 DOLLARS OF THIS. THE MEETING WAS FOLLOWED BY A PRESS CONFERENCE BY THE FRENCH FINANCE MINISTER, M. MICHEL DEBRE, WHO SAID THAT THE DEVALUATION DID NOT FUNDAMENTALLY CHANGE THE PROBLEMS OF BRITAIN'S COMMON MARKET CANDIDATURE.

IN LONDON, TODAY, LARGE CROWDS GATHERED OUTSIDE 10 DOWNING STREET, THE OFFICIAL RESIDENCE OF THE PRIME MINISTER, TO VOCALLY EXPRESS THEIR FEELING BOTH AND AGAINST DEVALUATION, WITH ITS ACCOMPANYING TOUGH AUSTERITY MEASURES. POLITICAL OBSERVERS SAY THE GOVERNMENT'S LONGER-TERM CHANCES OF HOLDING ON TO POWER WOULD BE VIRTUALLY SETTLED BY THE REACTION OF LABOUR PARTY SUPPORTERS OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS.
