  • Description

In Ethiopian, a week of special events in the capital Addis Ababa was launched on Monday, (8 January) to raise funds to help the thousands of Ethiopian living in desperate conditions because of the effects of a recent drought and famine. In rural areas the situation has been made worse by the effects of war against Somalia in the Ogaden and against Eritrean guerrillas demanding independence.

SYNOPSIS: The festival began in the National Stadium, where thousands of people had gathered to watch the first event, a celebrity soccer match between Ethiopian government ministers and foreign diplomats.

Ambassador and Charges d'Affaires from fourteen countries were the first team out on the pitch, followed closely by the side of ministers, wearing white. Both team enthusiastically limbered up for the game.

Lieutenant-Colonel Endale Tessema, the member of the ruling Provisional Military Administrative Council in charge of Social Affairs, addressed the crowd before the match. He described his government's long-term aim as the eradication of disease, hunger and illiteracy. He said relief funds were needed to combat the immediate to problems caused by famine, drought and war....casualties but that Ethiopian were also still trying to re-adjust to their new government's political programme.

Despite a rather bumpy pitch and the age range of the players, the match was fiercely fought. The captain of the diplomats team, Mahmoudou Haman Dicko, Ambassador of Cameroon, described his side as mature-with players aged from thirty-five to sixty-five. The end, despite several missed chances, the diplomats managed to win two-nil. The vital goals were scored by Mba Moto Ndong, the Charge d'Affairs of Equatorial Guinea and Jose Andres Diez, the Administrative Assistant in the Spanish Embassy. Colonel Tessema presented the trophy to the victorious Ambassador Dicko-and the crowd prepared to watch the rest of the day's sporting, musical and cultural entertainments.
