  • Description

About 600 Witwatersrand University students, South Africa, demonstrated on one of Johannesburg's main thoroughfares, Jan Smuts Avenue, Mar 5, against the Government's plan to introduce apartheid in the Union's Universities.

150 students stood on a traffic island holding placards and a 100-yard-long chain which symbolised the shackles of apartheid. Slogans on the placards called for "Hands off Wits ( Witwatersrand University )", "Kennis is Kleurblind" ( Truth is colourblind), and " We don't want this."
Security branch and uniformed police stood by as students thrusted pamphlets at motorists and pedestrians seeking support for their campaign against separate universities for black and white students.

Nearly two years ago the South African Nationalist Party Government attempted to enact university apartheid legislation but shelved the plan.

Should it become law this Bill would result in black students leaving such 'open' universities as Witwatersrand. Instead they would study at five University colleges described by the anti-apartheid groups as much inferior to the present universities.
