Background: In their first match under new manager Bobby Robson, the England soccer team struggled to draw against Denmark in Copenhagen on September 22. It was the first match of a new European championship campaign and while England twice led, it was the unfancied Danes who created most of the scoring chances. Bobby Robson could not have hoped for a better start when England (in white shirts) took a seventh-minute lead with a goal by Trevor Francis, recently transferred to the Italian club side Sampdoria. But the early promise of a glut of English goals evaporated and Denmark came close to equalising several times in the first-half. Olsen, the outstanding player of the match, squandered this first-half chance by shooting wide of goalkeeper Shilton's left-hand post. However, Danish pressure resumed after the half-time interval and the hosts were rewarded when Olsen won a penalty. The elusive Dane was brought crashing down by a tackle from Russell Osman, capping an unhappy night for the inexperienced England centre-back. Hansen netted to make the score 1-1. England did recover the lead, against the run of play, when Francis scored from close-range after a mistake in the Danish defence. But the visitor's hopes of a flattering victory were dashed in the final minute when Olsen evaded his markers, drew Shilton, and shot a fine individual goal. The Danish equaliser was the prelude to ecstatic celebrations by the home supporters inside the ground, but ugly clashes between rival fans outside. Final score: Denmark 2, England 2.
