Background: GEISLINGEN AND LEVERKUSEN, WEST GERMANY

Former European Cup holders Hamburg were sent tumbling out of the West German Soccer Cup on September 1, when they were soundly beaten 2-0 by amateur side SC Geislingen. Hamburg, first division runners-up last season and European Cup winners in 1983, were made to look like novices at Geislingen. The amateur team, scored with goals from Wolfgang Haug and Klaus Perfetto. They could have netted more but had a goal disallowed after 86 minutes, and hit a post in the final seconds of the match. It was Hamburg's most embarrassing Cup defeat since 1974, when they lost 2-1 to amateur side Eppingen. Kaiserslautern were one of two first division teams to be knocked out of the cup when they were pounded 5-0 at Bayer Leverkusen. Christian Schreier, bought by Leverkusen for one million deutsche marks (about 400,000 U.S. dollars) scored two goals and was also involved in his team's third, hit into the net by Waas after an hour. Tsch and Winklhofer completed the scoring. Second round matches are due to be played on November 21.
