Background: Large traffic jams built up in Rome this morning as motorists fought their way round the new traffic free zone which was opened on Saturday. The zone, centring around the historic Pantheon covers 124 acres and more than doubles the traffic free zones around Rome. (other areas out off to care include Piazza Navona, St Peters and the Trevi Fountain) To meet the protests of local shopkeepers that the traffic free zone would adversely affect their business on the authorities have introduced a special mini bus service for the convenience of shoppers in the traffic free zone.
