  • Description

Quebec's murdered Labour Minister, Pierre Laporte, was buried in Montreal yesterday (20 October) amid the tightest security measures ever seen in Canada in peacetime.

Mr.Laporte was killed last Saturday by members of the separatist Quebec Liberation Front who kidnapped him a week earlier. He was buried at the Cote des Neiges Cemetery.

Huge numbers of security forces surrounded Notre Dame Cathedral before the ceremony, which was attended by more than a thousand invited guests as well as relatives and close friends. The Federal Prime Minister, Mr. Pierre Trudeau, and Quebec's Premier, Mr.Robert Bourassa, were present for the 45-minute service, conducted by Archbishop of Quebec Maurice Roi.

Armed troops on roof-tops kept constant watch on the square outside the cathedral while helicopters droned overhead. Police squads searched sewers under the square for bombs and would-be assassins. Specially-trained dogs were taken around the cathedral to sniff out any explosives before the arrival of Government dignitaries.

Despite Mrs. Laporte's request for a simple funeral for her husband, the presence of so many official representatives turned it almost into a State occasion.

There were no flowers, at the request of Mrs. Laporte. Instead, donations were sent to a charitable institution for immigrant and Canadian-born children, the only one of its kind in Quebec.

Earlier, the police announced that they had seized 372 sticks of dynamite, detonators, knives and subversive literature in 2,000 raids since last Friday. Nearly 350 people had been arrested during the raids with 53 being released after questioning.
