Background: Demonstrating in protest against the recent invasion of Cuba, some 1,500 Arab and African students tried to force their way past police cordons outside the United States Embassy in Cairo, United Arab Republic, April 19.

Frustrated in their attempts to reach the Embassy, they marched through the city to the Cuban Embassy on Zamalek Island, where their cheering brought out the Cuban Ambassador, Senor Rivera, who read them a prepared statement.

The text of this statement was not published, but its effect on the crowd was to produce roars of anti-American slogans and support for Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro. Some of the more excited students burned American flags.
