  • Description

Premier Ian Smith was jeered and heckled by a crowd of whites on Wednesday (19 July) when he defended the Salisbury majority rule agreement at a Rhodesian Front (RF) political meeting. Veteran Rhodesian political observers said they could not recall any previous occasion when Mr Smith had faced such s hostile audience. Meanwhile, on Monday (17 July) the President of Rhodesia's National Unifying Force (NUF), Alan Savory, attacked what he termed the government's cover-up of a military arms fund scandal. Mr Savory said Mr Smith should name those involved, including people 'in high places'. Both meetings came as parties campaigned for a by-election in a white Salisbury parliamentary constituency of Friday (21 July).

SYNOPSIS: Two nights later, Ian Smith faced calls for his resignation at a Rhodesia Front meeting.
