SYNOPSIS: In Cairo, crowds wait for the firing of a gun to mark the end of the day's fasting and the beginning of the night's festivities. It is the month of Ramadhan, when the Muslim faithful are required to abstain from food and drink between sunrise and sunset.

In homes, cafes and restaurants, the sunset gun is the signal to sit down at tables already laid with good things only children under fifteen, expectant and nursing mothers, the old and sick, and soldiers on duty are exempt from the fast.

Nightfall is also the sign for children and adults to flock to the stalls and funfairs set up in the area of the city near the famous Khan el Khalaeli bazaar and the Al Akhsar Mosque.

There are entertainments for all ages. And for those still feeling the effects of the day's fasting, there are food stalls and peanut vendors.

The merry-making requires plenty of stamina--it goes on like this for 29 days.
