    More than thousand well wishers, including dozens of entertainment and sports celebrities, attended a testimonial dinner in Las Vegas on Saturday (15 May) to mark the former heavyweight champion Joe Louis' 57th birthday.

    President Nixon sent a message to Louis calling him "one of boxing's greatest champions and finest gentlemen." Louis sat alongside his former arch heavyweight foe, Germany's Max Schmeling, who flew form Hamburg for the occasion.

    SYNOPSIS: At the luxurious Caesar's Palace Hotel in Las Vegas on Saturday, more than a thousand well wishers gathered to attend a testimonial dinner for former world heavyweight champion Joe Louis. The occasion was to celebrate his fifty-seventh birthday.

    Among the guests present at the dinner was Louis' arch heavyweight foe Max Schmeling...he flew in from Hamburg for the occasion. Other boxers there included Sugar Ray Robinson.

    Actor Gregory Peck later read a message to the guests from President Nixon....he called Louis one of boxing's greatest champions and finest gentlemen. The President said that many fellow citizens remembered the Joe Louis fights with pride.

    The guests paid one hundred dollars each for the dinner....the proceeds will go to a fund to help needy boxers and athletes. Joe Louis won the heavyweight crown when he was only 23, and was the longest ever reigning heavyweight champion in a career spanning twelve years. Now he works in public relations at Caesar's Palace.
