    NGO DINH CAN, YOUNGER BROTHER OF FORMER SOUTH VIETNAMESE PRESIDENT NGO DINH DIEN, DENIED ALL CHARGES AGAINST HIM WHEN HE WENT ON TRIAL ON APRIL 16TH FOR CRIMES CARRYING THE DEATH PENALTY.

    A LARGE CROWD OUTSIDE YELLED AS HE ENTERED THE COURT IN SAIGON FOR TRIAL BEFORE A SPECIAL REVOLUTIONARY COURT.

    WEAKENED BY DIABETES, THE FORMER AUTOCRATIC OVERLORD OF THE NORTHERN PROVINCES WAS ALLOWED TO REMAIN SEATED DURING A LARGE PART OF THE PROCEEDING WHICH INCLUDED THE QUESTIONING OF WITNESSES.

    THE CHARGES INCLUDE MURDER, ATTEMPTED MURDER, ILLEGAL ARREST, EXTORTION AND FINANCIAL SPECULATIONS DAMAGING TO THE NATIONAL ECONOMY.

    IN HIS DEFENCE, NGO DINH CAN DENIED ALL THE CHARGES AGAINST HIM AND TOLD THE COURT HE HAD NO RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE ACTS ATTRIBUTED TO HIM BECAUSE HE HELD NO OFFICIAL POSITION.
