TRANSCRIPT: INTERVIEWER: "BIAFRA IS PREPARED TO ASSOCIATE WITH NIGERIA. BUT IT SEEMS TO ME THAT THE BIG STUMBLING BLOCK AT THE MOMENT IS THAT NIGERIA, THE FEDERATION WILL NOT ACCEPT ANY OF THIS UNTIL IT RENOUNCES DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE. HOW DO YOU THINK THIS STUMBLING BLOCK, THIS GREAT BARRIER, CAN BE OVERCOME?"

BASSEY: "(INDISTINCT)...AGREE FOR A NEGOTIATION. THEY KNOW THE REASON WHY WE BROKE AWAY AND IT IS JUSTIFIED ONCE YOU DON'T HAVE TO (INDISTINCT) BECAUSE OF MERE OBSTRUCTION TO (INDISTINCT) TO KEEP THE FEDERATION TOGETHER."

INTERVIEWER: "DO YOU THINK THAT IN THIS SEEMINGLY INTRACTABLE SITUATION THE PRESENCE OF A MEDIATOR WOULD BE USEFUL NOW AND WHO SHOULD THE MEDIATOR BE?"

BASSEY: "ANY COUNTRY, ANY FRIENDLY COUNTRY -- PARTICULARLY BRITAIN. I THINK BRITAIN HAS A VERY FORMIDABLE POLITICAL POSITION IN THIS WAY TO MEDIATE, AND I KNOW, I BELIEVE, IF BRITAIN IS ANXIOUS TO BRING PEACE AND UNDERSTANDING THIS COULD BE DONE."

INTERVIEWER: "YOU THINK THIS IN SPITE OF THE FACT THAT BIAFRA HAS DEPLORED BRITAIN'S STAND AT THE MOMENT IN APPARENTLY SIDING WITH THE FEDERATION."

    BASSEY: "WE'RE VERY FORGIVING."

INTERVIEWER: "YOU SPEAK OF MEDIATION, BUT THIS REQUIRES AN OUTSIDE PRESENCE, A MEDIATING BODY OR INDIVIDUAL. WHO DO YOU THINK SHOULD DO IT?"

BASSEY: "WELL, BRITAIN COULD DO THAT, OR AMERICA COULD DO IT ALSO. THEY'RE OUTSTANDING FRIENDS OF BIAFRA AS WELL AS NIGERIA."

INTERVIEWER: "YOU SPEAK OF BRITAIN, BUT ON ONE HAND YOU CONDEMN BRITAIN, OR YOU HAVE CONDEMNED BRITAIN FOR APPARENTLY TAKING THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S PART, SIDING WITH THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ON THE QUESTION OF ARMS FOR INSTANCE. DO YOU THINK THAT THE BRITISH GOVERNMENT WOULD STILL BE ACCEPTABLE FOR BIAFRA?"

BASSEY: "IT IS NOT TOO LATE FOR BRITAIN TO AMEND. AND I THINK BRITAIN CAN STILL DO SOMETHING THERE WHERE WE UNDERSTAND THE POSITION NOW -- WE DO FORGIVE BRITAIN FOR ERRORS SO FAR MADE" (SOF ENDS)
