    THE QUINTUPLETS WERE BORN TO MRS HILDARENE HARRIS AGED 31, THE WIFE OF A POSTAL CLERK, LIONEL HARRIS. MRS HARRIS GAVE BIRTH TO A SON AND FUR DAUGHTERS ON WEDNESDAY NIGHT AFTER FIVE YEARS OF A CHILDLESS MARRIAGE. SHE HAD BEEN TAKING FERTILITY PILLS FOR FOUR MONTHS BEFORE SHE BECAME PREGNATE.

    ONE DAUGHTER WAS STILL-BORN.

    MRS HARRIS, A NURSE, SAID THAT SHE HAD ALWAYS WANTED A BABY FOR HERSELF, AND WAS VERY, VERY, VERY HAPPY. HER HUSBAND SAID HE WAS VERY MUCH CONFUSED, BUT ELATED. BUT HE WAS WORRIED ABOUT SPACE AT HOME. OUTSIDE THE PREMATURE ROOM IS A HASTILY PAINTED CARDBOARD SIGN READING: "HARRIS PAVILION."
    THE HARRIS QUINTUPLETS ARE THE FIRST RECORDED IN NEW YORK. QUINTUPLET BIRTHS ARE SAID TO OCCUR ONLY ONCE IN EVERY 50 MILLION BIRTHS, EVEN WITH THE NEW FERTILITY DRUGS.
