Background: FOR THOUSANDS OF BRETON FARMERS IN SOUTH WEST FRANCE, YESTERDAY (THURSDAY) WAS A DAY OF ORGANISED PROTEST AGAINST A NEW LOW IN COMMON MARKET PRICES FOR CHICKENS.

IN DEMONSTRATIONS AT SAMATAN, AUCH AND TOULOUSE, DETERMINED FARMERS BLOCKED ROADS WITH THEIR TRACTORS AND LORRIES AND, ARMED WITH BANNERS AND PITCHFORKS, HELD MASS MEETINGS TO MAKE SURE THEY'D BE HEARD AT ANY COST. BUT IT WAS A PEACEFUL ENOUGH PROTEST AND THERE WAS NO POLICE INTERFERENCE.

THE LARGE CHICKEN EXPORTING FIRM OF MAGADUR, A FIRM AT LANGUIDIC, IN THE MORSIHAN, WENT BANKRUPT RECENTLY. IT USED TO BUY MORE THAN 40,000 CHICKENS A DAY FROM THE LOCAL FARMERS AND SELL THEM TO NORTHERN FRANCE AND WEST GERMANY. NOW THE NEW COMMON MARKET PRICES FOR CHICKENS HAVE FORCED THEM TO CLOSE DOWN.

TWENTY THOUSAND CHICKEN BREEDERS FACE UNEMPLOYMENT AND THE "MAGADUR" COMPANY IS NO LONGER ABLE TO PAY OUTSTANDING DEBTS. THE FARMERS SEE THEIR SITUATION MOVING FROM BAD TO WORSE.

WITH A FRENCH GOVERNMENT GRANT WHICH AMOUNTED TO 1.40 CENTIMES PER KILO MAGADUR USED TO SELL CHICKENS TO GERMANY AT 2.40 A KILO. SINCE THE NEW TARIFF CAME INTO FORCE IN AUGUST THE FRENCH CHICKEN CAN NO LONGER COMPETE WITH THE DUTCH BIRD, SOLD AT 2.07 A KILO.

THE WINDING UP OF THE FIRM OF MAGADUR CAUSED THE GOVERNMENT TO SUGGEST A TAKE-OVER BY FRANCE'S GUYOMARCH COMPANY. THE FARMERS, ON THEIR SIDE, WANTED A COOPERATIVE TO BE FORMED. NEITHER SIDE WOULD GIVE WAY AND BOTH WERE AWAITING RESULTS OF YESTERDAY'S DEMONSTRATIONS.
