  • Description

The first factory built in Britain for the large-scale manufacture of synthetic rubber has started production in Hampshire.

It's at Hythe, close to the edge of Southampton Water, and next door to the great Favley of refinery. And that's no accident, for the basis raw material used in the new factory is BUTADEINE - a by-product from the refinery, piped in direct.

The plant was built for the International Synthetic Rubber Company at a cost of every six million pounds, and when's it's running at full capacity the amount of rubber being turned out here will be something like seventy thousand tone a year.

Nearly all the procedure are automatic - controlled from this one room. In fact, very little is seen of the finished product until it reaches the drying stage. Work goes on day and night, all the year, and yet only fourth people are needed to man each shift.
