Background: The streets of Paris are ablaze with light as France prepares to celebrate the twin festivals of Christmas and the New Year. Brilliant illuminations mark out the great sweep of the most famous avenue of all, the Champs Elysees.
Not only the streets but the stores are brilliantly decorated, a reminder to the old and especially the young that there are still a few shopping days left, a little time in which to draw the older generation's attention to toys they may have overlooked.
The streets of the city centre are full of people buying presents, with shopping and generally entering into the festive spirit of the Christmas season. Most French towns make some attempt to deck themselves out at this time of year, but for sheer drama, Paris leaves most of them far behind.
