Background: Fierce opposition to United Nations plans for disarming Congolese forces....that was the theme of a big protest rally attended by President Tshombe in Elisabethville, Katanga, on Feb.8th, two days before Premier Lumumba's "escape" was announced.

At the football stadium where the meeting took place, de demonstrators of "Jenakat", a Katanga youth organization, carried banners supporting Mr.Tshombe and calling for a sovereign Katanga at all costs. There were other slogans against U.N. disarmament, and against "America", Communism, and imperialism of both East and West.

In his speech Mr. Tshombe said: "We were living peacefully until United Nations came down on us like Arab slavery in the days of old". He said it might soon be necessary to arm "each man", and warned that Africa belonged to Africans, not to America, Russia, Red China or to Europeans.

As they left the meeting, some of the crowd went to the American Consulate watched they then stoned without doing much damage. There was also a demonstration outside the U.N. headquarters, and all U.N. personnel are avoiding contact with the Katanga public as far as possible.
