Background: The West German car manufacturing company -- Volkswagen -- has introduced its second new model this year in an attempt to offset the declining sales of its once massively popular 'Beetle'.
The 'Golf' is a three-door saloon with a choice of either 1100 cc or 1500 cc. engine. Many of its parts are shared with the Scirocco coup -- introduced earlier this year -- so that manufacturing costs will be rationalised and reduced. It will still be more expensive than the 'Beetle'.
Owner European car manufacturers have suffered from greatly reduced demand this year, but Volkswagen has been particularly badly hit. In the first quarter of this year they made a loss. At the end of the month, the production lines in various Volkswagen factories will close down for six days in the second period of 'short time work' this year.
The 'Golf' will be built in very large guantities at Wolsfberg where the 'Beetle' production will be gradually run down. It will also be manufactured in the United States which last year took half of Volkswagen's total exports -- 470,000 vehicles.
