    Demonstrators in New York on Monday (October 1st) protested outside the Austrian Tourist Office. They were against the Austrian Government's initial pledge to two Arab gunmen to deny transit facilities to emigrating Jews and travelling through its territories.

    As well as the hundreds of demonstrators, several candidates for the upcoming election for Mayor of New York were outside the Fifth Avenue offices. The candidates, Abraham Beame and John Marchi, were there to show their support for the demonstrators. Another New York politician, Howard Samuels, told the demonstrators that "they would not be blackmailed by oil or terrorism", and that no nation and no person could remain silent when a country bows to terrorism."
    In a statement issued on Monday, 1 October, Austrian Government stressed that the government was in fact legally powerless to close the transit camp, run by a Jewish agency, at Schloss Shoenau.

    New York has a higher Jewish population than Israel.

    SYNOPSIS: Hundreds of demonstrators came out in New York streets on Monday, to protest the Austrian Government's pladge to two Arab Gunmen to deny transit facilities to emigrating Soviet Jaws.

    The demonstration was staged outside the Fifth Avenue Offices of the Austrian Tourist Board. New York has a larger Jewish population than Israel, and several prominent local politicians attended the rally. Two candidates for the upcoming mayoral election showed their support.

    One politician told the demonstrators that no nation could remain silent when a country bows to terrorism. The large, but peaceful, demonstration came on the same day Austrian official announced they were in fact legally powerless to close down the transit camp for Soviet Jews.
