  • Description

Libya called on all Arab countries to join battle against Israel when Arab League members met in Cairo on Monday (27 December) to debate the Middle East crisis.

Presiding over the meeting at the League's headquarters, Libyan Ambassador Mr. Saad Eddin Boushweirab said his country was prepared to lend all support behind efforts to liberate Israeli-occupied territories. Thirteen of the Arab League's 18 member states were represented by Foreign Ministers, the others by Ambassadors.

Last week, at a tripartite summit conference in Cairo, Libya and Syria pledged to free the occupied territories. The latest meetings took place a few days before the end of a year which Egyptian President Anwar Sadat has said will be vital in determining whether there would be war or peace in the Middle East.

SYNOPSIS: The Arab League headquarters in Cairo -- where on Monday delegates from 18 member states gathered to debate the Middle East crisis. It was the second such meeting within a month.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Mahmoud Riad led his country's delegation.

Libyan Ambassador Saad Eddin Boushweirab presided over the meeting, and in his opening speech he urged all Arab countries to join battle against Israel.

Libya, he said, was prepared to put all its support behind efforts for the liberation of the Israeli-occupied territories and the three Gulf islands recently seized by Iran. The Arab nation, he continued, was passing through a crucial stage which required "complete solidarity in the face of our common enemy".

The meeting was also to decide whether to call an Arab summit conference on joint strategy in case of war with Israel.
