    The news of the death of the Chinese leader, Chairman Mao Tse-Tung, was met with stunned grief amongst the residents of Manila's large Chinatown. At the Chinese Embassy, flags were immediately lowered to half mast. Immediately the announcement of Mao's death was made public, leading Philippine government officials went to the embassy to express their sympathies to the Chinese people through the Chinese ambassador.

    The Philippines Foreign Secretary, Mr. Carles Romulo, sent a message of condolence to the Chinese government and people. Mr. Romulo said that the entire Philippine nation felt sympathy for the people of China for their great loss. The Foreign Secretary added that Chairman Mac was an immortal figure and that the former Chinese leader had left a deep impression on all Asian thought and history.
