Background: A two-day meeting of the Organisation for European Cooperation and Development (OECD) began in Paris today (Thursday).
Delegates from the 12 member countries are attending, as well as representatives from the European Economic Community (the Common Market) and the International Monetary Fund (the World Bank).
They will examine proposals made by the recent Geneva conference on aid to under-developed and under-privileged countries. They hope to achieve greater efficiency all-round in the use of financial aid.
Moves are also to be made to strengthen the economies of needy nations by such things as 1) increasing private investment, 2) obtaining more effective international co-operation, 3) improving technical assistance, and 4) improving the terms and conditions of aid.
The member countries are: Belgium, Britain, Canada, Denmark, France, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, the United States and West Germany.
