  • Description

Police and Criminal Investigation Department officers in Nicosia, Cyprus, are still trying to trace the Greek Cypriot newspaper editor Antonis Pharmakides, who was kidnapped from his home, Apr 25. He is editor of "Ethniki" and "Alithia, which support former EOKA leader Grivas in his attacks on Archbishop Makarios, for his handling of the Independence talks with the British Government.

Several patches of blood on the front porch of the house, show that Pharmakides put up a struggle before being overpowered by his attackers. Lying on the porch was a sheet and a pair of spectacles. The Greek editor wears spectacles. Police officers think the kidnappers forced their way into the house then waited for his return.

News of the kidnapping came as a climax of a ruthless campaign to silence the anti-Makarios press. A leader writer on "Ethniki" had earlier been beaten up in Limassol. Vans distributing the papers have been ambushed, and thousands of copies burned. In the streets small boys have been threatened for selling copies.

All Greek and English-language newspapers called a 24-hour strike in protest against the kidnapping and the wave of brutality that has accompanied it.
