    The President of Kenya, Jomo Kenyatta, made a speech appealing for the Kirinyaga Technical Institute in Kenya's Central Province on Saturday (8 June). Then he laid the Institute's foundation stone, watched by at least 20,000 people.

    President Kenyatta drove to Kirinyaga from Gatundu, along a road lined with cheering and waving crowds. At the site of the new college, he was greeted by traditional dancers.

    On the rostrum with the President were the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the new college, Mr. Kariithi and the Kenyan Vice-President Mr. Daniel Arap Moi. Money so far collected for the appeal fund was handed to Mr. Arap Moi. It amounted to 1,000,000 Kenyan shillings (GBP 75,000 sterling).

    SYNOPSIS: Hundreds of people lined the route as President Jomo Kenyatta drove form his residence at Gatundu to a ceremony near Kerigoya in the Central Province on Saturday. He was greeted by a display of tradional dancing.

    The main purpose of his visit was to help in a fund-raising programme for the new Kirinyaga Technical Institute.

    An estimated twenty thousand people went to see him.

    President Kenyatta made a speech appealing for more funds for the institute. Of the two hundred and fifty million Kenyan pounds allotted to public works in the five year development plan, just over a quarter is devoted to social services, which include education. This allows for some money for the institute but more is needed.

    At a ceremony nearly one and a half million Kenyan shillings raised os far was handed to Vice-President, Mr. Ove Arup Moi.

    Then President Kenyatta laid the Kirinyaga Technical Institute's foundation stone. Kenya has decided to go ahead with all parts of her development plan despite firm forecasts of an economic recession this year.
