  • Description

FRANCE PLANS TO LAUNCH HER FOURTH AND FIFTH SPACE SATELLITES THIS MONTH FROM THE SAHARA BASE OF HAMMAGUIR IN WESTERN ALGERIA. THE LAUNCHING OF THE DIAMANT SATELLITES ABOUT 9 AND 19 FEBRUARY WILL BE THE LAST FROM THE SITE BEFORE IT IS HANDED OVER TO THE ALGERIAN GOVERNMENT IN JULY.

FRANCE WAS ALLOWED TO USE THE HAMMAGUIR MILITARY CAMP FOR FIVE YEARS UNDER THE 1962 EVIAN AGREEMENT THAT ENDED THE ALGERIAN WAR. TWO PREVIOUS FRENCH SATELLITES HAVE BEEN LAUNCHED BY FRENCH ROCKETS FROM HAMMAGUIR. THE FOURTH SATELLITE WILL CARRY REFLECTORS TO RECEIVE LASER BEAMS, WHICH WILL MAKE IT SPARKLE IN THE SKY.
