Background: INTRODUCTION: World cup soccer...and the excitement of a possible giant-killing as little Colombia took on mighty Brazil in Sunday's (20 February) first match of the South American Group One elimination round. The ground, in Colombia's capital, Bogota, was packed and most of Brazil's 100 million population wee watching on television.

SYNOPSIS: Colombia, in the all white strip, were straight into the attack and came close with this header.

But though they were ruffled by the Colombian's early aggression and appreciable skill, the Brazilians still manufactured the best chance of the half for themselves. Amazingly, the usually deadly Brazilian forwards failed to take it.

This Colombian free-kick was also powerfully struck, though easily gathered by Brazilian goalkeeper Leao.

The second half..and the Colombian side were clearly growing in confidence the longer they continued to be on equal terms with the Brazilians. This fine left foot shot was one of their best attempts at opening the scoring.

Brazil gained the ball often enough in midfield, with their four-four-two formation but they lacked their usual flair in front of goal where they missed striker Marinho, who was unavailable for the match. The Brazilians, however, were in a difficult position, for it was hard to risk playing their normal flamboyant game when they dare not give away goals in a world cup qualifying match.

The ball wound up in the Colombian net once, but the goal was disallowed for off-side -- and this injured Colombian player clearly thought he had been fouled as well. Some Brazilian supporters came onto the ground to protest but Colombian riot police were ready. The disallowed goal was to be the closest Brazil got, for the game ended a 0-0 draw, a proud result for Colombia.
