Background: A British Home and Foreign Office delegation has opened discussions with members of the Uganda Government about the citizenship and future of a number of Asians living in Uganda. The three-man British mission, led by Mr. W. Lea, arrived in Kampala last weekend. The discussions are expected to continue until the end of this weekend.

The talks follow proposals made by President Chote last month to grant Ugandan citizenship to British Asians who had renounced British citizenship, but whose applications were invalidated for technical reasons. The number involved is not known.

There are about 40-thousand Asians resident in Uganda. The British mission is attempting to determine how many wish to remain in Uganda as Uganda citizens; how many wish to return to India; and, how many wish to retain British citizenship and move to Britain.

Mr. Christopher Ntende, Permanent Secretary at the Uganda Internal Affairs Ministry told the British delegation that British Asians who did not intend to become Ugandan citizens or return to India were the responsibility of the British government.
