  • Description

THE SOUTH AFRICAN RUGBY UNION TEAM ENDED THE INTERNATIONAL PART OF ITS TOUR AT CARDIFF, IN WALES, TODAY (SATURDAY) STILL WITHOUT A VICTORY TO THEIR CREDIT. THEY DREW 6-6 WITH WALES IN A THRILLING MATCH THAT SAW THE SPRINGBOKS TWICE LOSE THE LEAD AFTER SPECTACULAR PLAY BY THE WELSHMEN.

IT WAS ONLY IN THE LAST MOMENTS OF THE MATCH THAT WALES SNATCHED VICTORY FROM THE SPRINGBOKS WITH A TRY BY SCRUM GARETH EDWARDS. HE FAILED TO CONVERT.

THE WIN WOULD HAVE BEEN THE FIRST FOR THE SOUTH AFRICANS, WHO WERE EARLIER BEATEN BY SCOTLAND AND ENGLAND. THEY DREW WITH IRELAND A FORTNIGHT AGO.

THE SPRINGBOKS TOOK THE INITIATIVE EARLY IN THE MATCH AT THE CARDIFF ARMS PARK GROUND. THEIR FORWARDS PLAYED WELL ON THE MUDDY PITCH, BUT POOR BACK PLAY SPOILT THEIR EFFORTS.

IN THE 20TH MINUTE, THE SOUTH AFRICANS WENT AHEAD WHEN HENRY DE VILLIERS LANDED A PENALTY GOAL.

GARETH EDWARDS REPLIED WITH A PENALTY FOR WALES 10 MINUTES LATER. THEN WINGER SYD NOMIS GOT AN UNCONVERTED TRY FOR THE SPRINGBOKS IN THE 50TH MINUTE.

VICTORY SEEMED SURE FOR THE VISITORS AS THE MATCH WENT INTO INJURY TIME. BUT EDWARDS'S DRAMATIC EQUALISING TRY ROBBED THEM OF THEIR FIRST WIN.

A DEMONSTRATION BY ANTI-APARTHEID PROTESTERS OUTSIDE THE GROUND FAILED TO INTERFERE WITH THE MATCH.
