Background: A well-dressed bandit team of four or five men, dubbed the 'funny-face' gang because one of them wore a false nose and glasses, drove a limousine up to New York's fashionable Hotel Pierre on Fifth Avenue on Sunday (2 January) handcuffed staff and guests, and then looted safe dopiest boxes of cash and jewellery.

New York City detectives said on Tuesday that the total lost in money and valuables had already reached two million dollars (800,000 Sterling), and could go as high as Four million dollars, (1,600,000 Sterling).
