  • Description

At Oberstdorf, Bavaria, Doc 30, seventy crack skiers from twelve countries met for the first of four ski jumping events which open the Austrian-German winter sports season.

At this hotly contested event in a cool climate, Finland's Juhani Karkinen, (No. 69), excelled with two supreme jumps of 73 and 73.5 metres. He was followed by (No. 55), Kjell Sjoberg of Sweden - 73.5 and 75 metres, but fewer points for poise - and by Otto Leodoltor of Austria, (No. 48), with 71 and 73 metres. Olympic title holder Helmut Recknagel, East Germany, finished only in sixth place.

The remaining three jumping events will be held at Garmisch, Germany, and at Innsoruck and Bischofshofen, Austria.
