    Police used tear gas to disperse a group of two thousand students who demonstrated in Rome on Monday night (7 December) against the military trial in Spain of sixteen Basques. During the demonstration near the centre of Rome a number of petrol bombs were thrown.

    The demonstrators, chanting slogans and wielding banners, broke up after squads of police, having fired tear gas, advanced in force among them. The police managed to prevent the demonstrators from reaching the Spanish embassy.

    A number of arrests were made. The demonstrations was organised by a number of Communist groups. It was the second anti-Spanish demonstration in Rome in the past three days.
