    THE PRESIDENT OF THE WORLD BANK, MR. ROBERT MCNAMARA, ARRIVED TODAY (MONDAY) IN INDIA FROM PAKISTAN TO WHOM HE HAD EARLIER PREDICTED A DRAMATIC INCREASE IN WORLD BANK LOANS DURING THE NEXT FIVE YEARS. MR. MCNAMARA IS ON A WEEK'S VISIT TO STUDY INDIAN DEVELOPMENT PROBLEMS AND DISCUSS FUTURE ECONOMIC AID WITH THE INDIAN GOVERNMENT.

    MR. MCNAMARA'S VISIT FOLLOWS HIS RECENT WASHINGTON STATEMENT IN WHICH HE SAID THE WORLD BANK WOULD CONTINUE TO PROVIDE ASSISTANCE TO THOSE COUNTRIES WHO WANTED AID IN PREVENTING A FURTHER INCREASE IN THEIR POPULATION.

    HE SAID IT WAS IMPOSSIBLE FOR THE WORLD WITH ITS LIMITED RESOURCES TO PROVIDE ENOUGH CAPITAL TO MAINTAIN EVEN CURRENT MARGINAL SUBSISTANCE IN THE DEVELOPING COUNTRIES WITH EXPANDING POPULATION.

    IN NEW DELHI, MR. MCNAMARA TOLD REPORTERS THAT THERE WAS EVERY REASON FOR HOPE IN INDIA'S ECONOMIC FUTURE AND HE PROMISED CONTINUED WORLD BANK AID.

    DURING HIS STAY, THE WORLD BANK PRESIDENT WILL MEET MINISTERS, PLANNING EXPERTS AND OFFICIALS DISCUSSING THE SOURCE AND QUANTITY OF ASSISTANCE TO INDIA.

    MR. MCNAMARA HAD EARLIER PLEDGED ALL POSSIBLE ASSISTANCE TO PAKISTAN AFTER A TWO-HOUR MEETING WITH THE PAKISTANI PRESIDENT, MR. AYUB KHAN. FOREIGN ASSISTANCE HAD DWINDLED EACH YEAR SINCE PAKISTAN LAUNCHED HER THIRD FIVE YEAR PLAN IN 1965.

    INDIA'S DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER, MR. MORARJI DESAI, MET MR. MCNAMARA AND HIS PARTY AT NEW DELHI. THE VISITORS THEN MET THE PRESIDENT OF INDIA, DOCTOR ZAKIR HUSSAIN.
