    --Twenty-four year old Willie Holdorf of Cologne, West Germany, became new Olympic champion on Oct 20th by using his skill and stamina in amassing 7,887 points over the ten chosen events. Russia's Rein Aun was second with 7,842 points and C.K. Yang of Nationalist China, a favourite for the championship, was knocked down to fifth place. Another German, H Walde, was third and American P Herman fourth.

    Russia's Tamara Press broke the Olympic record for the women's shot when she heaved the metal bail 59 feet 6 inches in Tokyo on Oct 20th, thus bringing her country's total of gold medals to 17. Germany's R Garisch-Culmberger was second with a throw of 57 feet 9 1/4 inches and Miss Press's team-mate Galina Zybina third with 57 feet 3 inches.
