King Hassan of Morocco has called for Arab support for President Sadat's peace moves. He says the Arab World should not leave the Egyptian leader alone in his struggle for peace. To promote Arab backing, the King has sent three special envoys on a tour of Middle East capitals.
SYNOPSIS: King Hassan endorsed the peace initiative while opening the first Congress of Arab Justice Ministers in Marrakesh on Wednesday (14 December).
Morocco's Justice Minister Mr. Maati Bouabid, presided o???r the three-day conference.
The discussions concentrated on ways of reinforcing cooperation in judicial matters. Delegates also studied the possibility of setting up an arab bureau of penal justice. At the same time in Morocco, the Arab Organisation for Social Defence against Crime held its eighth Congress, mainly studying the factors influencing crime and juvenile delinquency.
Among the delegates who heard King Hassan's call to support President Sadat were representatives from Saudi Arabia, Djibouti, Somalia, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Tunisia, Mauritania and Egypt itself.
King Hassan said the Arab World had to applaud all steps towards peace and a total settlement of the Middle East crisis. A notable and expected absentee from the Justice Ministers' Congress was Algeria, whose relations with Morocco have deteriorated over the Western Sahara issue. Algeria supports Polisario Front guerrillas who are seeking independence for the former Spanish Sahara.
