  • Description

GENERAL DE GAULLE HAS TODAY (MONDAY) CLINCHED A RENEWED PRESIDENTIAL MANDATE TO MAP OUT THE NEXT SEVEN YEARS OF HIS FIFTH REPUBLIC. IN YESTERDAY'S DECISIVE ELECTION, HE GAINED A 55 TO 45 PER CENT VOTE OVER THE LEFT-WING CANDIDATE M. FRANCOIS MITTERRAND.

IT WAS SOON CLEAR THAT THE GENERAL WAS RUNNING ABOUT 10 PER CENT AHEAD OF HIS RIVAL AND THIS GAP WAS MAINTAINED AS THE RESULTS CAME IN.

ONLY 80 MINUTES AFTER COUNTING, M. MITTERRAND CONCEDED DEFEAT BUT REFUSED TO CONGRATULATE THE PRESIDENT AS THE RESULT WAS "CONTRARY TO THE INTERESTS OF FRANCE."
WHEN THIS FILM WAS TAKEN GENERAL DE GAULLE HAD CHALKED UP 11,782,531 VOTES - MORE THAN TWO MILLION AHEAD OF M. MITTERRAND'S 9,607,611 VOTES.

    M. MITTERRAND, HAVING CONCEDED DEFEAT, PROMISED HIS SUPPORTERS THAT HE WOULD THROW HIS EFFORTS INTO MAKING THE 1967 PARLIAMENTARY ELECTIONS "THE DECISIVE ENCOUNTER THAT WILL SAVE THE REPUBLIC FROM THE ADVENTURE INTO WHICH A DIMINISHED GAULLISM WILL PLUNGE IT."
GENERAL DE GAULLE NOW BEGINS A SECOND SEVEN-YEAR TERM AS PRESIDENT OF FRANCE. HOWEVER HIS WINNING MARGIN WAS MUCH SLIMMER THAT THE SUPPORT HE SECURED IN REFERENDUMS DURING HIS FIRST TERM OF OFFICE AND NOW FRANCE WAITS TO SEE IF THIS WILL MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE TO THE GENERAL'S POLICIES.
