  • Description

FOUR MONTHS AGO, SOME 2,000 PEOPLE LOST THEIR LIVES IN ITALY'S VAOINT DAM DISASTER. A GREAT SLAB OF MOUNTAIN PLUNGED INTO THE DAM, SENDING A TORRENT OF WATER ROARING INTO THE VALLEY BELOW.

THE TOWN OF LONGARONE WAS VIRTUALLY WIPED OUT, SAVE FOR THE CHURCH AND A FEW HOUSES. TODAY A GREAT MANGLED, TWISTED HEAP OF CARS LITTERS THE AREA NEAR THE CHURCH. THESE VEHICLES HAD BEEN FOUND BURIED UNDER THE PILES OF MUD AND RUBBLE.

ANOTHER GRIM REMINDER OF THE NIGHT OF THE CATASTROPHE -- OVENS LEFT STANDING AFTER A BAKERY WAS CARRIED AWAY BY THE SURGING WATER. ALONG THE SCARRED MOUNTAINSIDE, A FEW RUINED HOUSES CAN STILL BE SEEN.

BUT WHAT OF THE FUTURE? SURVIVORS AND OTHER PEOPLE FROM ALONG THE PAIVE VALLEY, WHERE THE DAM IS LOCATED, FEAR THAT THE SPRING THAW MAY BRING ANOTHER LANDSLIDE.

TO BRING ATTENTION TO THEIR FEARS, THEY HAVE BEEN DEMONSTRATING BY PUTTING UP ROAD-BLOCKS ALONG THE ALEMAGNA HIGHWAY IN THE LONGARONE AREA.

THE DEMONSTRATORS CLAIM THE ITALIAN GOVERNMENT HAS "FORGOTTEN" THEN AND ITS PROMISES FOR A SPEEDY RE-CONSTRUCTION OF THE AFFECTED TOWNS AND NORMAL PUBLIC FACILITIES. THEY ARE ALSO DEMANDING RESTITUTION FROM THE GOVERNMENT, WHICH THEY BLAME FOR THE DISASTER, AND OTHER COMPENSATION.

VEHICLES ARE BEING HELD UP FOR AN HOUR OR SO BEFORE THE BARRICADES ARE REMOVED. BUT THE DEMONSTRATORS WARN THAT UNLESS THE GOVERNMENT ACTS QUICKLY ROAD HOLD-UPS WILL BE LENGTHENED.

STAGING ROAD BLOCKS IS A PUNISHABLE OFFENCE, BUT, ACCORDING TO REPORTS, POLICE HAVE SO FAR NOT INTERVENED.
